Website conversion guide

How much website traffic do you need to win more customers?

A simple way to work backwards from your customer target, close rate and website conversion rate instead of guessing how much traffic you need.

Start with the customers you want

Say you want four extra customers per month. If you close one sale from every four qualified enquiries, you need around sixteen enquiries. Starting with the outcome makes the rest of the calculation easier to understand.

Use your website conversion rate

If five in every one hundred website visitors enquire, a five per cent conversion rate means sixteen enquiries need roughly 320 visits. A weaker conversion rate needs more traffic; a stronger page can produce the same enquiry volume with fewer visits.

The basic routeTarget customers → enquiries needed → website visits needed → traffic budget.

Do not ignore lead quality

A high conversion rate means little if the enquiries are for the wrong service, outside your area or too small to be worthwhile. The page should make the services you offer, the areas you cover and the next step obvious before someone contacts you.

Work out the value before the spend

Multiply expected customers by the average customer value. Compare that revenue with the advertising spend and any management cost. This gives a clearer view than chasing clicks alone and helps you decide whether the numbers are commercially sensible.

Use the estimate as a range

Conversion rates change by service, location, season and traffic source. Use a cautious estimate, a likely estimate and a strong estimate rather than treating one number as certain. Planning with a range makes it easier to judge risk before you increase spend.

Improve the weakest number before buying more traffic

More traffic is not always the answer. If the website is receiving visitors but almost nobody enquires, increasing the advertising budget can simply make the waste larger. Look at the full route. A clearer offer may improve the click rate. A stronger service page may improve the website conversion rate. Faster follow-up may improve the close rate. Each improvement means the same amount of traffic can produce more revenue. Work backwards from the final sale, find the weakest percentage in the chain and improve that first. Then use extra traffic to scale a route that is already working rather than paying to expose a problem faster.
